![]() The debate was supercharged in the summer of 2020, following the murder of George Floyd and mass protests over policing practices, with many activists urging that law enforcement be removed from non-emergency response altogether. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office is among the wave of law enforcement agencies across California and the country rethinking how they handle mental health-related calls.Īs the national reckoning over use of excessive force and the death of unarmed civilians gained steam during the past decade, demands also grew for communities to reconsider their approach to the personal crises - severe mental illness, homelessness, substance abuse - underlying so many 911 calls, arrests and, sometimes, fatal encounters with police. “But I also work there, so I’ll make sure, when they ask me, ‘What do you think?,’ I’m definitely going to tell them.” “We don’t really have the final say,” Alvarado said. I’m at my wit’s end.”Īlvarado assured her they would place her son on another 72-hour hold at the local emergency room for evaluation, and that he would recommend the man be transferred to a facility for longer-term treatment. “I just want him to get help,” the woman said. He offered to take her to the county crisis stabilization unit if she was feeling overwhelmed by the confrontation with her son. “It changes how your body reacts to things,” Alvarado told the woman. It’s been hell every day here,” she wailed. When she tried to call the local behavioral health agency for an appointment, she said he threatened to kill her and threw a baseball bat at her. The man was not taking his medication for bipolar disorder since he got home from his latest hospital stint a few weeks ago, she said. Now the man stood calmly, barely responsive, as Spittler checked him for weapons. Minutes before, siren blaring, sheriff’s Deputy Galen Spittler raced his patrol truck through the winding Penn Valley roads to respond to a report of a 33-year-male - one they had placed on a psychiatric hold last fall - assaulting his mother. Pepper and a colorful glass marijuana pipe splayed out beside him as he looked out on the wooded valley below. "Just because it works on one network, it doesn't mean that all the pieces – technical, policy, governance – have been put in place behind the scenes everywhere. The man sat silently on a cluster of boulders when the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office mobile crisis team pulled up. "While this is a good day, it also points out the need for national-level co-ordination," said Lance Valcour, the outgoing executive director of the Canadian Interoperability Technology Interest Group. The piecemeal rollout has been questioned by some critics. 24, no other definitive plans have been made elsewhere in Canada to introduce the service. While federal regulators mandate that the required technology be installed by Jan. Proud of being first to introduce the service, E-Comm's Doug Watson said that many more operators across the country "were hot on their heels."Ĭalgary's 911 service will follow on Monday. The quick rollout in the Lower Mainland was aided by the local 911 provider, considered one of the most advanced in the country. The new system required a number of technical tweaks to the local mobile phone network. "Once you start adding complex English structure and vocabulary it becomes confusing, especially when people are in a panic," she said. She advised local 911 provider E-Comm to simplify the language in its texts, asking that words like "concise" be replaced by "short." Many in the hearing impaired community have a grasp of English only as a second language. Lyons was invited to test the new system before it was launched. "We are going to roll out sequentially as operators are ready across the country." "It's an incremental improvement to what we already have," said Chris Langdon, a vice-president at Telus Corp. The operators will still be able to hear sounds from the user's phone and track its location. Under the system, registered phones dialling 911 can be connected with operators and a text-message session will be initiated. The service, launched on Tuesday, is available in Metro Vancouver and some communities along the Sunshine Coast and Squamish Lillooet region. This gives me my independence to contact emergency services now I'm just as free as anyone else," Janice Lyons, a service leader at the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing said through a sign-language interpreter. "This is something we've waited many years for. ![]()

The stone is indicative of grinding stones used in the region for thousands of years. The flour produced was mixed with water and eaten as a paste, or cooked in the coals of a camp fire and eaten as cakes or loaves. Visit the BrightCHAMPS blog page to read the most recent and entertaining blogs about Grindstone and Minecraft. The grinding stone and top stone shown here were used by Indigenous women in the semi-arid region of New South Wales to grind seeds from grasses, trees, shrubs, succulents and ferns to release the starch for cooking purposes. So, the grindstone is an amazing tool that you must have in your inventory. Also, if you have a grindstone, you can turn any unemployed villager into a weaponsmith. In Minecraft, you can use the grindstone to fix broken items, remove enchantments from items that already have them, and get a lot of experience points. ![]() They do have a shiny new design on the front-the notch is gone in favor of the newly named Dynamic Island. When you get down to brass tacks, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends) aren't markedly different from their predecessors. A big reason why is weight-it's 3 grams lighter than the smaller 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro. Considering the bigger size, I expected the Plus to be unwieldy like the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but it's surprisingly manageable. That's really my only major complaint, besides the fact that its price is a little too close to the iPhone 14 Pro. The 6.7-inch screen is wonderfully vast, but it's a shame Apple didn't add a 120-Hz refresh rate for smoother interactions. If you're frequently turning on Low Power Mode, this is the iPhone to buy. It even bested the iPhone 14 Pro Max in my testing. I routinely had to charge the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro at the end of a busy day, but the iPhone 14 Plus often had enough juice to last until the afternoon of the second day off the charger. It's identical to the iPhone 14 in every way except for size and battery life. Instead, Apple replaced it with the iPhone 14 Plus. One major change in the iPhone 14 lineup? There's no new iPhone Mini. Both will help you reach emergency services if you're in an area with no service or if you're unresponsive after a car crash. Two new passive features you'll appreciate are Emergency SOS via Satellite and Crash Detection. A new Action video mode lets you capture super-stabilized videos. There are some nice new perks, like how Cinematic mode (Portrait mode but for video) now films in 4K instead of just 1080p. Many of the improvements are in the cameras, which have larger sensors and are powered by a new image-processing pipeline called the Photonic Engine that Apple says produces brighter and sharper photos, but we haven't noticed much of a difference from the iPhone 13. I've found the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 is perfectly manageable in one hand, and it roughly lasts a full day with medium to heavy use. It has the old notch design, with all the basics you'd want, from MagSafe and wireless charging to IP68 water resistance. It has a similar processor-the A15 Bionic with one additional graphics core, so gaming performance is (almost imperceptibly) better. The iPhone 14 ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends) is an awful lot like the iPhone 13 that came before, which isn't a bad thing. Note: Apple hasn't been including a charging adapter (nor earbuds) in the box since the iPhone 12, just a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, so you might need to buy a 20-watt adapter like this one. The single-lens rear camera takes pretty great daytime shots, but there's no night mode, and low-light images are lackluster compared to phones like the Google Pixel 6A. It gets sub-6 5G connectivity, meaning it won't be able to hit the super-fast internet speeds available on pricier iPhones, but this isn't a big deal as you rarely run into that type of 5G. That chip also brings better battery life, but the SE will last you roughly a day of use-less if you're a heavy user. It has the same A15 Bionic processor as the iPhone 13 models, making this budget phone a powerhouse among its peers and capable of running the most demanding games. ![]() Internally, the 2022 SE is a whole lot more powerful than the previous generation. This is also the only iPhone in the lineup without ultra-wideband support, which improves AirDrop and lets you precisely find nearby AirTags. There's no MagSafe accessory system, and the headphone jack is nonexistent, but at least you still get plain ol' wireless charging. ![]() (We've rounded up our favorite cases and accessories here.) That means you still get a cramped yet compact 4.7-inch LCD screen with a physical home button, thick bezels around the screen, and Touch ID. Externally, there are none-even cases for the 2020 iPhone SE will fit this version. Apple refreshed its most affordable iPhone for a third generation ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends) in 2022, though you'll be hard-pressed to spot the differences. ![]() ![]() ![]() “He’s a guy who’s the baby in the room, who’s scared of all the criminals,” Elgort says. Although Baby is a man of few words, he is never without a pair of headphones-listening to a personal soundtrack at all times in order to drown out the tinnitus he developed as a child, caused by a fatal car crash that took his parents’ lives. Directed by Edgar Wright, also behind the cult-classic Shaun of the Dead, the film casts Elgort as Baby, a “strong but silent type” getaway driver. Swerving out of the YA lane is his role in Baby Driver, a high- speed, car chase movie that lands somewhere between action and crime genres with a musical twist. While he’s known for his work in the Young Adult genre, he’s dovetailing that with meatier, more serious roles where he can really flex his muscles, both literally and figuratively. With only a handful of feature films under his belt, Elgort has quickly risen to the top. ![]() The actor is so beloved, the wooden bench that he kissed The Fault in Our Stars co-star Shailene Woodley on in Amsterdam went missing after the film, presumably stolen by Ansølo-crazed fans (his track-spinning pseudonym). Calling him a “heartthrob” is no understatement. Watching Elgort on screen transports you to a bygone era of the matinee idol: his deliberate, low voice and classically handsome looks are reminiscent of old Hollywood.Įlgort jumped onto the screen and into our teen-girl fantasies with starring roles in the Divergent franchise and The Fault in Our Stars. His father, Arthur Elgort, is a legendary fashion photographer whose work has lined the pages of Vogue for the past 45 years, and his mother, Grethe Barrett Holby, is a highly respected opera director and choreographer. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because he comes from a line of artistic provenance. With his latest feature film Baby Driver and an upstart music career, the 23-year-old actor/dancer/musician is firmly hunkered down in Hollywood’s driver’s seat, testing the limits of both what he can do and shifting gears before getting too comfortable. ![]() ![]() ![]() Generally, you can have an ADU on your property if residential uses are allowed on it, although exceptions may apply.Īlso, you must have an existing or proposed single-family home on your property or an existing These regulations relate to your property, visit Symbium Build.Īllowed locations.
